BODYBUILDING
Introduction
Bodybuilding is defined as the usage of progressive or gradual resistance exercise that controls a person’s musculature as well as develops it (Kuipers, 1998). Any individual who is involved in or engages in the activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. There are two types of competitive body building; amateur and professional. In both of the competitions, the bodybuilders line-up on stage and strike poses that are specific. They later on perform individual routines. The performances are for a panel of judges who choose the winners on different criteria like the muscularity, their symmetry, and conditioning. The competitors prepare for the competition by use of tanning lotions that aid in making their muscles look more defined and distinct.
Some world-renowned body builders include Charles Atlas, Steve Reeves, Reg Park, and Arnold Schwarzenegger among many others. The top body builder title is awarded to the most outstanding athletes according to the relevant judgment. IFBB professional Phil Heath of the United States currently holds the title.

History of Bodybuilding
Bodybuilding begun in the ancient Greece and inspired the development of bodybuilding to what it is today. The modern competitors mostly originated from Europe. They grew out of European strongman theatrical and circus acts that were in the late 19th century. The first physique contest in America was held in 1903 and was actually staged by a culturist who was known as Bernarr McFadden. It took place in the city of New York. The title that was given that time was “The Most Perfectly Developed Man in the World.” It was given to a competitor who won known as Al Treloar. It led to other contests to spring up in the years 1921 and 1922. These were held by Macfadden. Charles Atlas was the winner of both the competitions. However, the bodybuilding contests remained very rare up until there was the inception of the Mr. America contest, held in the year 1939. It was held under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) that belonged to the United States. The winners of Mr. America were John Grimek and Steve Reeves. The two enjoyed admiration as the role models for bodybuilders worldwide.

Bodybuilding later developed rather quickly immediately after World War II. Mr. America and the Amateur Athletic Union gained popularity in the 60’s.  Later on, rival organizations known as the International Federation of Bodybuilders’ and Britain the National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association emerged. Oscar Heidenstam and former by Canadians Joe and Ben Weider founded the latter. Mr. Universe contest was held in London and was among the most prestigious international bodybuilding event for more than a decade. Mr. Olympia, a bodybuilding contest that was held in 1970, surpassed Mr. Universe. Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the most bodybuilders of his time. He won Mr. Olympia more than five times. He had a perfect physique, an appealing personality, as well as a career in films. He fostered an acceptance of the bodybuilding both as a sport and fitness activity in America.
Positive Impacts of Bodybuilding
People in the current world tend to disregard their bodies. This is often because of a false sense of comfort, negligence, lack of time amongst among many other factors. The health department did a piece of research and discovered that most people do not meet the standards of the proper weight and height. Most are either malnourished or obese. Most food currently consumed contains an absurd voluminous amount of fat. Working out helps solve this problem as it helps in burning of fats.
Bodybuilding is good work out as it burns fats and builds muscle that prevents excessive storage of fat in the body (Baker, 2013). Bodybuilding is a hundred percent effective when it comes to burning fats. The first advantage of body building one develops physically. Although physical development is supposed to be a natural occurrence, nowadays human beings lifestyles have been distorted and our environment has been interfered with so bodybuilding is effective. This development is, therefore, interfered with and, it stagnates hence it is up to us to put in more effort.
Bodybuilding increases the strength, muscular strength to be specific, of an individual (Rivera, 2014). Strength is necessary in many circumstances that we encounter in our world today an example being lifting of objects and danger that might require physical strength for self-defense. It not only helps in this but also aids in bone formation as well as alignment strength. This makes one stronger and hence not easily susceptible to injury. Bodybuilding also increases the flexibility or one’s body. Flexibility is beneficial to the body of a human being in more than one way.

Bodybuilding instills discipline in the individual. This makes it easier to maintain body fitness. Physical fitness helps them improve health wise. It is proven that physical fitness improves the heart and makes it healthier. When one puts effort into exercise, the heart undergoes automatic exercise as well. This action when repeated severally strengthens the heart muscles. Bodybuilding reduces stress levels of people. When working out a certain amount of stress is released.

Impediments to Body Building
Bodybuilding can affect a person’s health in myriad of ways, primarily by making one prone to strokes (Kuipers, 1998). The heavy exercises increase the heartbeat. If this gets out of control, the risk of suffering from a stroke increases. It is also important to note that most body builders result to use of steroids. Steroids assist in fighting the blood pressure otherwise if not used; the blood vessels are likely to collapse. Body builders become overly ambitious and start using steroids. There are certain kinds of steroids damage the liver and kidneys. They help the process of body building to become easier and faster. One gets quickly gets addicted. Purification from these drugs is not easy and, it is next to impossible.
Bodybuilding might lead to the collapse of the central nervous system (Kuipers, 1998). This is because that it mostly triggers the nervous system. The rate of metabolism increases due to the extremity in the work out hence disabling some nerves to handle the pressure and become automatically weak. The weaker the nerve system becomes the more one becomes prone to brain hemorrhage. Bodybuilding can also cause heart damage. This is because it challenges the blood circulation. Research shows some steroids cause the increment of bad cholesterol and decreases the good cholesterol thus causing improper functioning of the body system.
Bodybuilding may also cause automatic body dehydration. It causes a lot of sweating leading one to dehydration. The body cannot function without water, as it needs it constantly for proper functioning of the body. Bodybuilding can lead to excess burning of fats. Not all people have excess fats in the body. Extreme fat burning is only good for a specific group, the one that has excess. The body needs fats and if it lacks most organs become automatically weak. Some trainers encourage excess work out with the help of some supplements that lead to excess loss of fats. These trainers are not nutritionists hence are ignorant of the harm they cause.

Conclusion
Bodybuilding like all other sports has its pros and cons. It is considered a sport since it has helped many people in regards to overall body fitness. It is possible to take it up as a full-time career, as there are many individuals currently making a living from bodybuilding. Sports organizations should encourage most people in their countries to take it up to improve the overall fitness and consequently overall health in their respective countries. The more people take up bodybuilding, the more they encourage others to stop neglecting their bodies and take care of them.
The relevant authorities should ensure that there are widespread of resources necessary for not only bodybuilding but also general fitness. This can be achieved by building of more public gyms and the training of gym instructors. The training will also help the trainers understand the importance of healthy working out, therefore, ensuring that the quality of lives of body builders is improved. Additionally, fitness science and health can be introduced to the education system.
